Hair transplantation operation has a stigma surrounding it. People claim that the procedure leaves scar marks at the operation site. There is some truth to this claim, though this is not always the case. There are two main methods for hair transplantation widely popular today. They are called FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) and FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation), the latter is sometimes also called FUSS (Follicular Unit Strip Surgery). So continue reading to learn more about scarring in hair transplantation surgery.
The FUE Technique
The more recent method, FUE, relies on the usage of an electrical device called micromotor. A micromotor cuts small circular holes around a follicle. These small holes heal almost without a trace. Though, some patients complain that they can see the scars of these holes, especially when they cut their hair short. This happens when the extraction is excessive. We also call this an aggressive extraction.
Usually, doctors determine the number of grafts to avoid patchiness like this. Also, if the patient’s donor area is not very healthy, extraction may leave some scars visible. Be sure to find a reliable clinic in order not to experience such complications in your hair transplantation.
The FUT Method
The other method is a bit older, but it is still in practice. FUT method was the method that made hair transplantations popular. Before FUT, the procedures left a very unfavourable “pluggy” appearance, resembling doll hair. In FUT method, however, operators plant homogeneously extracted grafts. FUT’s final implantation process is exactly the same as the process of FUE. However, the difference comes in the extraction phase. Let’s have a look.
Firstly, the doctor draws a line around the back of the patient’s scalp. Then the doctor makes an incision around this line. Thirdly the doctor carefully removes the skin flap and the medical team picks the flap for dissection. After this, the doctor carefully sutures the place of skin extraction. It’s important to have an experienced hair transplantation doctor do this to minimise scarring. Meanwhile, the medical team divides this flap into individual follicles.
The rest of the operation goes on in a pretty similar fashion to FUE. The doctor opens tiny incisions called canals. After this, the team begins inserting follicles into canals one by one. Right after the operation, it’s up to the patient to take supplements to help quicken the healing process. Also, avoiding excessive sweating, smoking and alcohol for a while can improve the final results.
