Crown Hair Transplant

Crown hair transplant is one of the most popular hair transplants among patients. Another name of it is the vertex. We can do crown hair transplants either on their own or in combination with other areas. Hair around the crown usually grows in a spiral pattern. That’s why this part usually poses a challenge for the operator.

Each person has different hair growth patterns around their crown area. Some have a single spiral, some double and some have even more. During hair transplant operations, we do our best to give the patient natural looking growth patterns. We determine at which direction hair is going to grow at the canal opening phase of operation.

Crown Sheds Hair The First

Among men, the crown is typically one of the first areas that you are going to notice shedding. If you choose to undergo a crown transplant operation when you are young, you should know about some things first.

In most male pattern baldness cases, crown usually sheds all hair. If you wish to get the operation early on, you may need another one some years later. It takes a lot of grafts to cover the crown fully. So waiting before your male pattern hair loss settles might be a wise thing to do.

If you do not have a very healthy donor zone at your scalp or your crown needs lots of grafts. Our doctor may offer to take grafts from under your chin and from your chest too. We can use hair from these areas as well in a crown hair transplantation procedure. Our doctor will give you advice on your individual case.

Advice On Sleep After Crown Transplant Procedure

Since the crown is quite towards the back of our head, sleeping after a crown hair transplant is sometimes tricky. You will sleep with a neck pillow after the operation to avoid impacts and friction towards your grafts after hair transplantation operation. Though neck pillow may not save your crown from friction when you are fast asleep. So you need to position yourself well during your first few nights after the crown transplant procedure.

After the first week of the procedure, you can ditch the neck pillow. Yet, you must pay special attention to this area and cover it from the impacts of all sorts to ensure the best possible result.

Modern Techniques

There are two main methods of crown hair transplantation. Either direct hair implantation or follicular unit extraction. In the former (DHI from onwards) we use special pens called Choi Pens. These pens eliminate the need to open canals before inserting the follicles. Instead, operators load pens with follicles and pen does the job of opening the canal and implantation at the same time. This method allows for more dense crown hair transplantations.

On the other hand, DHI method is a bit more expensive than the other one. The latter method (FUE) utilises canals and tweezers. It is pretty much the standard hair transplantation method nowadays. An operator opens the canals first, and multiple operators implant them one by one. Another significant difference is that FUE operations take shorter than DHI operations.
