The most desired natural and dense appearance of hair transplant recipients. Unfortunately, these expectations result in disappointment as a result of many bad hair transplantation. People want to have a hair transplant to feel happier. The basic criterion of this happiness is to provide a natural image that cannot be understood by anyone else. However, some of the transplantation results in failure. A significant portion of those who apply to us are those who have previously had a faulty hair transplant elsewhere and come to have it corrected. 

What Does Unsuccessful Hair Transplant Mean?

Let’s explain this with a very simple example. Communication between people becomes eye to eye. You sat face to face with someone who does not know you and you are talking. If the other person’s eyes move involuntarily towards your forehead and hair while talking to you, the action performed on you is unsuccessful. In fact, after a while “did you have hair transplantation? If he asks a question, you may feel even more depressed.

But during conversation, if the other person’s eyes do not look at your hair, we can talk about a successful hair transplant. In fact, tell the other person that you have a hair transplant while chatting. If you get an answer from the other person saying “Come on, it is not clear at all, it is very natural, I couldn’t understand”, you will be quite happy.

Causes of Poor Hair Transplant

We can collect the unsuccessful applications that we call bad hair transplantation in 5 groups. These;

• Transplantation to a person who is not suitable for hair transplantation ,
• Improper Promises
• Mistakes in graft harvesting
• Mistakes made during planting
• One’s own mistakes in the post-transplant period.

1. a) Transplantation to a person who is not suitable for hair transplantation

Let’s not forget that not everyone may be suitable for hair transplantation. In the examination performed before the hair transplantation, it is easily understood whether the person is suitable for transplantation. In inspection criteria;

Age:

At a very young age and if there is a rapid hair loss, it is not correct to decide on hair transplantation.

Hair loss story in the family:

The type and speed of hair loss near the first degree like father, brother and uncle should be questioned. For example, a father with Norwood 7 will likely have his son in the same situation as the father. This sowing should be clearly stated to the person considering it.

Hair Loss Type and Speed:

In patients with common hair loss such as Norwood 6-7, the hair follicles taken may not be enough to cover the balding area.

Donor Site Status and Donor Capacity:

It is an important criterion. How many hair follicles can be taken from the donor area? How many square centimeters is the balding area? With a simple mathematical calculation, how many roots will fall per centimeter? These should be calculated before planting. A person who is taken to the operation randomly without calculating is also a candidate for a bad hair transplant result.

What Is One’s Expectation?

This must be asked to the patient. We will say what we can do. Let’s not forget that creating out of nothing is peculiar to Allah. In FUE hair transplantation, what we do is transfer the donor area hair to the balding area. So we are changing the location of the hair. We are not wizards either. We have to tell the patient whatever we can do.
In the picture below, you can see a failed hair transplant performed by another center. Actually, what was wrong from the beginning was to have a hair transplant on this person. Because the donor area is inadequate and it is obvious from the beginning that a successful result cannot be obtained.

1. b) Improper Hair Transplant Promises

Unfortunately, it is one of the most common situations. Many hair transplant centers ignore the fact that hair transplantation is a medical practice and hunt customers with unethical slogans. They approach those who consider hair transplantation with attractive slogans. As a result, such traps are also unfortunately fallen. The sentences above sound nice. But not everything is as easy as it seems. Most of the reasons for bad hair transplantation are due to such wrong choices. 

1. c) Errors in Graft Collection
   As we know, there are FUT and FUE methods. Since the FUT method is almost no longer implemented, we will look at the errors made in the FUE method. When we say bad hair transplantation, the chain of mistakes caused not only by the transplanted hair but also due to root extraction has an important place. Let’s take a brief look at these now.

Taking more grafts than necessary Before hair transplantation, the doctor examines the patient and calculates how many grafts can be taken. Let’s not forget that everyone has a donor capacity. If too many grafts are taken by overstressing the donor capacity because we will get more hair follicles, unpleasant images will occur a few months after hair transplantation. The number of grafts that can be taken varies from person to person. Approximately 20-25% of the number of roots per 1 centimeter square should be taken. A larger number of grafts will distort the image in the recipient area.

Not taking grafts homogeneously:

An equal number of grafts should be taken from each centimeter. After inhomogeneous root uptake, moth-bored images may occur.
Few grafts should be taken from the areas above the ear. On-ear hair follicles are less in number and thinner than the middle regions. Serious gaps can occur if these areas are overloaded.

Incorrect use of micromotor or manual tools: When extracting manually or with micromotor, the angles and length of the roots should be determined correctly. If the root intake is not taken at the appropriate angle and depth, some of the hair follicles will be traumatized and broken or crushed. Therefore, the roots that are taken and transplanted in this way will not grow, and will be considered as bad hair transplantation since there will not be an expected number of grafts.
