Beard Transplant

It is already a common and known practice that hair transplant is rather applicable and has different methods to apply by the doctors as they see fit and meet the requirements of the patient. In some  cases even body hair transplant is feasible.

It is a method in which the operating doctor extract grafts from the part of a body of the patient where hair follicles are the densest and convenient.

Beard is a feature a man needs as an indicator of masculinity. During the completion of adolescence, voice thickening, height and weight change are experienced. However, growing a beard is very important for a man. By the age of 20, beards may still not grow thick. Now, naturally, beard gain is over. So beard transplantation may be required. But how satisfactory are the beard transplant results?

How about beard transplant though?

As people care about their appearances more and more in today’s world, there is demand for beard transplant arises. With that demand comes the supply and fortunately it leaves with the fact that beard transplant is also rather viable just like hair transplant.

It is performed by the doctors and clinics who have the permission and experience and what is basically is similar to the traditional hair transplant methods to a great extent. Procedure,  advantages and disadvantages, prices and recovery process will all be explained further in the  following  paragraphs.

What Is Beard Transplant?

Before diving deeper into what a beard transplant operation is, as a patient one should understand what the traditional hair transplant is and how it works. As the word transplant implies slightly, hair transplant and beard transplant operations are quite similar to one another both in terms of application and the procedures to follow. Generally, grafts are removed from the back of the head, where the hair follicles are densest. It is then transplanted into the scalp where the hair density is less.

There are various methods to do this, depending on the application. But the goal remains more or less the same. The back of the head may not be suitable for grafting. This time, other parts of the body are looked after. Usually the chest and back can be used. The whole procedure here is actually the same for beard transplant. Hair grafts extracted from some other part of the patient’s body are transplanted to the jawline where the beard is desired to grow. The whole concept of the procedure works the same as traditional hair transplant operation methods performed by doctors.

How Does It Work?

There are two methods in beard transplant operations conducted by the doctors. They are called Follicular Unit Extraction and Follicular Unit Transplantation methods, respectively. The old method is more common because it takes longer but is less painful. Both methods fundamentally get the same job done yet regarding the procedures conducted, they possess differences.

In short, FUE is taken one by one from the donor area, which is the back of the head where the hair follicles are the most intense. It is made by collecting a healthy follicular unit. It takes and requires more time along with patience. However, it is the favorite choice of many patients because it is less painful. FUT is done by cutting a small strip of tissue from the back of the patient’s head. This allows the doctor to remove the hair follicles from the tissue. As the verb cut is included here, it’s a slightly more painful process. In the end, both methods intend to achieve the same result.

Regardless of the method chosen by the patient or the recommendation of the doctor himself, the  procedure starts with harvesting, that is shaving an area on the head or back of the head. The harvesting process is painless as local anesthetic is applied prior to the procedure. The harvesting is the first  time for it allows the doctor to see the  hair follicles clearly.

After The harvesting comes the implantation in which doctor applies another local anesthetic to the area where the harvested hair follicles will be transplanted. Afterwards, the doctor will be implanting the each follicle in to the desired area the way the patient and him agreed upon prior to the  operation. Recovery procedure and what to expect will be explained in the following paragraphs.

What Are The Advantages and Disadvantages?

Advantages and disadvantages remain the same as other traditional hair transplant methods owing  to the fact that both are fundamentally same procedures with only thing changing to where the hair  follicles are going to be transplanted.

So as a patient, the expectations from the result must be the same. For a start, success rate is not guaranteed and the successful outcome of the operation depends greatly on the healthiness of the hair the patient has on the back of his head as that is the area that is usually picked as donor. Second, when it is thought that it is a surgical operation, scars on the jaw line should be expected.

Both of these methods are just like other traditional hair transplantation types. It is applied for a long time with a high success rate. So you have realistic expectations. One can also be optimistic, as both methods are successful and satisfy the patient’s desire. Finally, the shape of the beard to be transplanted is determined by the patient himself. So he will choose his own beard shape himself.

What Is Recovery Process Like?

Regardless of the type of procedure, method performed by the doctor, hair follicles are to be settled into place and begin growing within 3 or 4 months after the procedure. The actual results of the  process that will give away if it has been successful or not can be expected to after 8 or 9 months. If the procedure performed is successful, beard growth will occur as if it had already been there naturally. With all this mentioned, there are some dos and don’ts as well so as not fail the whole procedure.  Use of antibiotic ointment for your scalp and face might be recommended by the doctor. The skin will be sensible so washing might be avoided as well.
