Spironolactone is basically a diuretic drug for the treatment of high blood pressure (hypertension). It may also be beneficial to treat potassium deficiency, swelling (oedema), and hormone disorders. It causes an increase in sodium amounts and protects sodium while water is excreted from the body. Therefore, the user should be only under the supervision of a doctor.

The determination of regular blood pressure and electrolyte levels is essential for the first few months of treatment. It can be dangerous to use Spironolactone in moderate renal impairment.

It acts as an androgen antagonist by inhibiting androgen receptors, as well as the production of androgens from the ovaries. The user should not exceed 100-200mg / day doses. Diuretics are generally safe but have some side effects, such as constant urination and loss of minerals. This may lead to hair loss as our hair needs necessary minerals and nutritions for continual growth. Therefore, spironolactone may have a negative effect on hair as well.

Spironolactone Positive Effect

Spironolactone is a common treatment of polycystic ovarian syndrome and hirsutism cases in women. Besides, it is a potassium-sparing diuretic. Therefore it reduces fluid in the body without causing potassium loss. It is also for the treatment of cirrhosis cases of ascites. 

Spironolactone has anti-androgenic effects. Therefore, it is possible to use it in the treatment of hair loss in women. The binding of these androgens reduces weakly resistant cellular receptors and testosterone synthesis.

Spironolactone acts as an anti-androgen in two ways. First, it slows down the androgen production of the adrenal glands and ovaries. Second, it blocks the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Spironolactone is one of the most potent anti-androgen drugs. It is preferred for topical treatments since it does not pass into the systemic circulation.
