How to Stop Hair Loss at 18

Millennials’ Growing Hair Loss at 18

It appears that more and more millennials today suffer from hair loss, and they have been seeking a cure to stop their shedding which occurs even at 18. Compared to older generations, the number of millennials who experience hair loss is more than others. Today, more than 50 million men and 30 million women suffer from hair shedding. Although women usually get over with hair loss thinning hair in their entire scalp in the worst case, men might get bald. Of course, it is a completely natural cycle of life and aging, but when it reveals at an early age, it could be very stressful. Men usually find the solution as having a hair transplant. It is not surprising when the hair transplant technique is considered. Because especially the Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) method offers you a permanent solution, which a lot of treatment could not give.

About millennial hair loss, a recent study was conducted in China, revealed by China Newsweek magazine. The study found that in China, men in 20s have more chance than former generations to lose their hair. There were 4,000 students from Tsinghua University in Beijing. And the study is based on different kinds of techniques such as anecdotal, self-reported, etc. However, about 60 percent of participants indicated that they had been losing a great amount of hair until then. Surprisingly, 25 percent of the participants indicated that they didn’t realize their hair loss until their family members or close environments warned them. On the other hand, 40 percent of them indicated they were aware of their condition. As an interesting statistic from the study, students who reported that they had been losing their hair were likely to study in departments such as science, math, and automotive engineering.

What Causes Hair Loss at an Early Age

These numbers are not China of course. Studies in other countries, such as the U. S. show that numbers of millennials who experience hair loss increased. We usually know hair loss as it is a natural cycle, but it appears that something has changed. A famous dermatologist in the U. S., Dr. Andrea Hui said that more and more young people started to go to her office. And these people’s ages vary from 18 to 25, whether they are men or women. Even they don’t lose their hair; they go to dermatology clinics for their thinning hair or receding hairline conditions.

There are a lot of factors that cause hair loss. But before you use some unknown cosmetics, we recommend you to see a dermatologist first. A dermatologist is a doctor who specializes in skin problems including hair. So although you think you know the best about your hair, only he or she could examine you the best, and offer you the most suitable treatment for your hair and health. Perhaps your hair loss stems from some underlying medical disease. Perhaps it is temporary due to stressful events you have been into recently. Once you go to the clinic, you will get the best answers.

Usually, men are diagnosed with male pattern alopecia, which is also known as androgenic alopecia. Symptoms of androgenic alopecia start usually with thinning hair structure or receding hairline. It might begin with an M shape on your upper head and go through the back until it makes you bald. Like men, women suffer from androgenic alopecia too. But their condition does not make them bald, although they might lose a huge amount of hair. More like, their hair gets thinner and weaker.

Hereditary or Medical Condition

So what are the causes of hair loss at an early age, such as at 18? Besides knowing the general symptoms or seeing a dermatologist, take a look at your family history. If you think you are having a hair loss problem, there might be other people in your family, from your father’s or mother’s side. Because hereditary factor is one of the most common and effective factors among others. Sometimes certain genital hormones cause hair loss. Actually they more like trigger hereditary hair loss. Due to their activity begin in puberty, you might experience an early hair loss.

Sometimes hair loss stems from a simple delay in the hair growth cycle. Perhaps it might be a result of major illnesses, surgeries, or traumatic events. In these kinds of situations, your hair is likely to grow back (but still, you would better to see a dermatologist again). Sometimes hormonal changes cause that temporary loss. Pregnancy, childbirth, use of birth control pills, or menopause could be some examples. On the other hand, examples of a medical condition based hair loss are thyroid disease, alopecia areata (which we mentioned in our other articles), or ringworm (it is some sort of scalp infection). Other factors are cancer, overwhelmed blood pressure, depression, heart problems, diabetes, arthritis, a death in the family or close environment, or excessive weight loss.

What Is the Best Solution

So what you should do in a situation like hair loss? Medications could be the first option in many causes of hair loss. One of the most popular ones is called minoxidil. The dermatologist is likely to offer you minoxidil with other hair loss treatment than using it. It might carry some side effects. For example, your scalp might get irritation or itchy structure, which is considered another cause of hair loss. When you scratch your scalp, you are likely to harm hair follicles that lead shedding. Another side effect is some of the hairs might reveal even on your face, as well as your head.

Another option is finasteride, oral medication. You usually take it daily, to refresh androgenic alopecia. Using this, it is expected to slow losing hair. But side effects are found unwanted for most of the men. Usually, it results in impaired sexual function.

In addition to medical treatments, perhaps your dermatologist might offer you a better solution: hair loss. Like we mentioned above, although medications could be useful for slowing loss, they are not fully effective and permanent. It appears that the only permanent solution is having a hair transplant.
