There are many possible causes of hair loss. These include diet, mineral deficiency, medications, severe stress or illness, pollution, and genetic makeup. One-third of the human population suffers from hair loss, and thousands of this third are women. There is no guaranteed way to prevent it if you have hair loss due to genetic makeup or if you experience hair loss due to reasons beyond its control. But you can do your best to keep your hair in top condition by taking care of it as needed.
● Limit the use of hairdryers
Heat weakens hair proteins. Continuous heating and drying of the hair may cause the hair strands to weaken and break, thus hair loss. Otherwise, the problem of hair loss might not occur. It is best for her hair to dry on its own. So don’t use a hairdryer and let your hair dry on its own. Other devices that give heat to your hair include curling irons, electric hairbrushes, and hair straighteners, which also damage your hair. If you are using heated tools, be careful because the constantly burning scalp can permanently damage the hair follicles.
● Avoid getting a perm.
Perm is called chemical straightening or chemical hair curling. These procedures can damage your hair. In particular, it breaks the inner bonds of your hair, then reshapes it to straighten or curl it. This process weakens your hair; it makes it lifeless, dry, and fragile. Excessive drying and broken hair cause hair loss over time.
Stop using paints and chemicals. Frequent use of hair coloring chemicals increases the risk of serious damage to the hair. Dye your hair every four to six weeks at the most. Rather than dying your hair when your hair starts to turn gray, letting it turn gray would be the best thing you can do for your hair.
● Don’t bleach your hair.
When bleaching your hair, the chemicals penetrate the upper skin, and this destroys the substance that gives your hair its natural color. By doing this, you change the structure of your hair, and your hair will be more susceptible to damage. You weaken your hair. Blow drying and hairstyling combined with bleaching can literally damage your hair.
● Don’t tie your hair too tight.
In some hairstyles, you need to tie your hair tightly; hair elastic and hairpins, when used every day, can cause hair loss. For example, tightly tied ponytails, tightly knitted braids, African braids (cornrows), and braids can cause significant hair loss when done every day. Wrapping the hair tightly with the curler, especially the heated one, may cause further hair loss. Hair loss caused by tying the hair too tightly is called “traction alopecia” in medicine. Since this is the cause of hair loss, this situation can be completely prevented.
● Wash your hair with a mild shampoo
Washing hair helps prevent hair loss by keeping the hair and scalp clean (by preventing infections that may cause hair loss). You should not wash your hair every day because the shampoo can cause the natural oils from your hair to go away. Try to wash at most once every two days. Clean hair will appear more voluminous compared to dirty hair when using mild shampoo. When dirty, hair looks greasy and voluminous compared to clean hair.
● Choose a shampoo suitable for your hair type.
A good shampoo can really help you have healthy hair. So take some time to find the right shampoo for your hair type. Think about whether your hair is thin, dry, oily, or normal, and try a few different options to find out which shampoo works for you. If you have dandruff or color your hair, choose a suitable shampoo. Protein-fortified shampoos and conditioners that make the hair look voluminous temporarily soften and thicken the hair. Because these fill the gaps in the hair shaft but do not repair the damaged hair.
● Check the ingredients section to find a mild shampoo.
You can maintain a healthy scalp and hair by using a mild shampoo. Looking at the contents of the shampoo will help you see if it is a mild shampoo. Do not use any shampoo that contains sulfates, parabens, and/or sulphonates. The first thing to look after water is whether it contains Isethionate or Glucoside. Common ingredients found in mild shampoos are sulfosuccinates, sultanas, and amphora acetates. Silicones, polyquaterniums, and “guar” are some of the good ingredients in shampoos.
● Use a good quality hairbrush
The way you comb your hair can greatly affect your hair. Use a soft hair brush made of natural fibers and comb from top to bottom, bottom to out. When combing your hair, be as gentle as possible and don’t pull your hair too hard. Avoid using a brush when your hair is wet; use a comb instead.
● Try massaging your scalp.
Massaging the scalp with a nourishing oil (such as coconut, rosemary, lavender, or almond oil) increases the flow of blood to the surface of the scalp and to the hair follicles. Massage by rubbing the scalp warms the skin, and increases circulation there. In other words, the cells in the hair follicles are adequately nourished, and as a result, the growth potential of the hair increases. Massage on the scalp helps you relax, and this relaxation affects all bodily functions.
● If you are concerned that your hair is thinning, test it.
You can do a test called the “hair pull test,” whether you have a hair loss problem or not. Take a lock, about 20-30 strands of hair, and grab the hair with the help of your thumb and index finger. Pull slowly but hard. If more than six strands come out at the same time, hair loss may be a problem. This is not a proven test. Therefore, if you think that your hair is shedding more than normal, see a doctor or a trichologist. Remember that a lot of hair is shed naturally every day.
