Tips for Sleeping after Getting Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)

You are probably aware that there is a short period of recovery after getting a follicular unit extraction (FUE) hair transplantation. Each session of FUE hair transplant requires the patient to pay extra attention to certain things for a short period of time. One of the most important aspects of hair transplantation aftercare is sleep.

People are concerned that they may damage their fresh grafts while sleeping after the operation.

  • The recipient area is a bit tender and sensitive after the procedure, and the grafts need some time to get a strong grip on the scalp.
  • Rest assured, though, that the risk of damage to your fresh grafts is quite low.

Of course, the risk is low provided that you follow the necessary guidelines. Also, following these guidelines will ensure a healthier good night’s sleep for you. Here are some steps you can take to ensure a night of safe and sound sleep.

Sleeping Guidelines after FUE Hair Transplantation

After your operation, we will provide you with a neck pillow, like the ones they give you on flights. This pillow will provide you with some neck support, so the recipient area does not touch the surface of the pillow or the mattresses. Any friction against your freshly implanted grafts carries the risk of irritating or even dislodging your grafts.

On top of using the neck pillow, we also recommend you to set up your pillow in an upright position. This way, you will help your body dissipate any inflammation. And by putting a barrier between your head and the headrest, you eliminate the risk of bumping your head.

Some people are used to sleeping on their sides and can’t sleep comfortably on their back. They tell us that they benefit greatly from putting up a couple of pillows on both sides. This way, they cannot roll over to their sides even if they wanted to.

After the Hair Transplant Operation

The day after the operation, we take in patients for bandage removal. We clean the operation sites to prevent any risk of infection at this phase, then remove all the bandaging. At this phase, we put on that notorious (yet highly necessary) headband. This headband has to stay for at least two days. Alongside this bandage, we will also give you certain medications and instructions on how to use them. In this pack of medication, you will get an anti-inflammatory medicine. It is of utmost importance that you don’t miss these meds as they will ease your healing process greatly.
